Volunteer with Tri-County United Way’s Free Tax Preparation Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Campaign

Volunteers are needed for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. No prior experience is required. All volunteers will be provided with training tailored and will also receive resources for independent study on fundamental income tax laws for both federal and state returns.

GLENS FALLS, NEW YORK – Acquire tax preparation skills while positively impacting our Tri-County community. How can you contribute? It’s easy. Volunteer to assist your community by offering free tax preparation services through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.

The VITA program, sponsored by the IRS, offers free tax preparation to eligible residents nationwide. Locally, Tri-County United Way, Cornell Cooperation Extension — Washington County and the Moreau Community Center have partnered with Tri-County United Way to create a network of VITA volunteers who serve residents of Warren, Washington, and Northern Saratoga counties.

“Participating in VITA volunteering offers an excellent chance to gain tax preparation knowledge while supporting our Tri-County communities,” said Joan Prouty, VITA Outreach Coordinator. “We offer comprehensive training to become an IRS-certified tax preparer—your enthusiasm for supporting others is all that’s required.”

On average, volunteers dedicate approximately two to four hours per week from mid-January to April 15 to the VITA program. Volunteers represent diverse backgrounds and professions, so one doesn’t need to be an accountant to make a meaningful contribution. The training program, coupled with user-friendly software, equips volunteers to effectively assist others with tax preparation.

Our volunteers are offered a no-cost, comprehensive training program that consists of in-class instruction and self-paced study.  This training will prepare you to take the IRS certification test.  If you’d like to volunteer, CLICK HERE.

In 2023, these local volunteers successfully filed 2000 tax returns, resulting in over three million dollars in tax refunds. Individuals and families with an income of $60,000 or less are qualified to have their federal and state income taxes prepared by our IRS-certified volunteers, completely free of charge.
