Empowering Independence: Supporting and Caring for the Visually Impaired

Written by Laura Jensen

Founded in 1935, the Glens Falls Association for the Blind, Inc. provides vital services to individuals of all ages who are blind or visually impaired across Warren, Washington, Hamilton, and Northern Saratoga Counties. Located at 144 Ridge Street in Glens Falls, the organization is led by Chief Executive Officer, Phil Jessen, who has dedicated 48 years of service to this nonprofit, supporting communities in the North Country and beyond.

With a team consisting of two full-time staff and three part-time staff, Phil and his dedicated staff serve approximately 275 individuals throughout the region yearly. The Association offers a wide range of comprehensive programs for the visually impaired, including outreach, education, adaptive living support, and services aimed at preventing blindness while enhancing the overall well-being of those affected.

One of the key programs offered by the Association is YALP (Your Adaptive Living Program), an independently run initiative designed to help visually impaired individuals develop the skills necessary to live independently. The Association also provides transportation for visually impaired individuals to medical appointments, ensuring access to essential healthcare. Additionally, a monthly peer support luncheon is offered to agency members, promoting advocacy, social interaction, and combating loneliness among peers.

The Glens Falls Association for the Blind is a proud partner of Tri-County United Way, and we are thrilled to support their ongoing work and outreach in the community.
